The Hobbit : The prelude to The Lord of The Rings

In contrast to the grand scope of J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the story of The Hobbit is the much smaller, more personal affair, chronicling the first big adventure of a reluctant young halfling by the name of Bilbo Baggins. Now, Inevitable Entertainment has woven this tale into the context of a fairly standard action adventure game. Tolkien fans may enjoy the game’s presentation of Middle-earth lore, but The Hobbit tends to rely too heavily on derivative, uninspired gameplay for it to stand up on its own.

Though it regularly takes liberties with the details, the game is fairly faithful to the original story of The Hobbit. Bilbo is swept away from his comfortable hobbit hole in The Shire by an imposing wizard called Gandalf the Grey and a group of dwarves 13 strong, all of whom intend to travel to the Lonely Mountains to reclaim a dwarven treasure from a none-too-friendly dragon named Smaug. On his adventure, Bilbo runs into all manner of trolls, goblins, and giant spiders, as well as a creepy, pathetic cave-dwelling creature called Gollum, who happens to possess a very special ring. The Hobbit is an elemental tale in the genre of high fantasy, and the story elements lifted from the book are some of the strongest elements in the game.

It’s apparent from the start that The Hobbit quite sincerely wishes to be an action adventure game much in the same strain as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and its format is fairly typical for the genre. Bilbo starts off his adventure with a sack of throwing rocks and a walking stick to defend himself, but as the game progresses, he’ll pick up a sword and learn some new attacks, and about halfway through the game, he’ll gain the fabled One Ring, which he can use to turn himself invisible for short periods of time. The bulk of the gameplay relies heavily on action adventure staples like platform jumping, light combat, simple item-based puzzles, and a healthy amount of stealth action.

The platforming portions of The Hobbit are pretty straightforward and tend to go on for great lengths. These sections can be a bit challenging at times, mostly because the controls and the camera aren’t always agreeable–though a lot of the game’s bite is taken away by the liberal dispersal of save points. The combat is also pretty cut and dried. Bilbo can attack enemies from a distance by using his throwing rocks, but he’s far more effective when he gets up close and personal with his glowing Elven sword. He can lock on to a single enemy easily enough when equipped with his sword, and it makes one-on-one combat a lot more manageable. But most of the time he’ll be fighting a small group of enemies at once, and locking on to one enemy makes it difficult to defend against any of the other enemies.

Bilbo’s assigned role of burglar within the adventure party, and the ring’s ability to turn him invisible, makes the game’s regular use of stealth action seem like a no-brainer. Like most stealth action, it boils down to pattern recognition and basic trial and error. Stealth action is designed to build a sense of tension, but it’s all too predictable here, and in practice it ends up just being slow and boring. You’ll also find plenty of treasure chests in your travels, many of which are sealed with strange, arcane locks, giving Inevitable Entertainment an excuse to implement the hottest new gameplay mechanic for 2003, the lock-picking minigame. The Hobbit’s take on the lock-picking minigame tests your reflexes with a quick succession of timing-based puzzles. Ultimately, the gameplay ideas that The Hobbit is built on are perfectly serviceable, but they have all been done before, and done better.

While Peter Jackson’s films based on the Lord of the Rings trilogy has popularized Middle-earth as a very dark, gritty, and rather unpleasant place to live, The Hobbit has a slightly lighter take on Tolkien’s fantasy realm, and this comes across most apparently in the visuals. The game generally uses a bright, saturated color palette, which gives the world a certain vibrancy. The exaggerated character designs, the sketch drawings that appear during portions of the story exposition, and detailed environmental textures, which have a hand-painted look to them, all give the game the feel of an illustrated fantasy book for children. Indeed, this is the most kid-friendly presentation of the Tolkien universe to date–whether you’ll appreciate this or not will depend on how you like your high fantasy, really. But, despite some rough enemy character models and animations, and the fairly limited size of the environments, The Hobbit is a decent-looking game.

Demolition Racer : Rip

As games get more and more advanced, a lot of them also get more and more complicated. That means longer learning curves, more instructions to sift through, and often more time spent learning the game than actually enjoying it, which makes games like Demolition Racer a treat: You can install it and be playing like a pro in under 30 minutes.

For such a simplistic single-player game, Demolition Racer does have a lot of variety. There are multiple types of races, from the standard chase mode where the winner is the one who gets around the track in the fastest time, to Last Man Standing, an arena-style demolition derby. What makes these races different is that they aren’t scored by your final standing alone – that score is multiplied by the amount of damage you inflict on your opponents, so you can’t just cruise to the front of the pack and expect victory. Points are scored for sideswipes, head-on collisions, and “death from above,” in which you land directly on top of another car and knock it out with a single crunch.

There are ten tracks you can choose from (plus three demolition derby arenas), eight different cars, a single-race mode, and a number of different leagues. A lot of the cars, tracks, and types of races (like “chicken,” where some cars drive against the flow of traffic) are hidden when you begin playing, but you unlock these features as you advance in league play.

Demolition Racer’s controls are very good, and its physics are great. You’ll see cars cartwheel down the track before they burst into flames or skid hundreds of feet upside-down before coming to a stop. The graphics are also good; there are some really nice textures in some places, although some objects look a bit flat. The music, done by bands like Fear Factory and Empirion, really fits well – the booming soundtrack is a great accompaniment to the bone-crushing races.The racing and collision physics are probably the best feature of Demolition Racer. The cars control extremely well and each car has a unique feel depending on its characteristics. Also, the frequent collisions throughout the game are sometimes nothing short of spectacular. You’ll keep seeing new and fantastic pileups as you continue to play. Such crashes, as well as Demolition Racer’s overall fun factor, make its replay value very high.

Its lack of any multiplayer support is a letdown, but Demolition Racer is great fun even without human opponents. The computer-controlled cars are pretty intelligent and will start coming after you if they know you’ve been shying away from collisions. However, the game would have been better if you could also smash your friends into oblivion.

The game’s simplicity does have consequences, and while these problems are minor, Demolition Racer does have quite a few of them. There is no integrated rear-view mirror (you have to switch modes to see behind you) and no onscreen maps of the track you are on. You are not allowed off the track, which gets especially annoying when your car is flying through the air and you hit an invisible barrier to keep you on course. There isn’t much variety in the type of damage your car will sustain either. First your hood will blow off the car, then the rear end will get smashed in, and then finally you’ll start spewing smoke – this progression occurs identically each time. You’ll also notice small annoyances like the fact that all 16 cars in a race look similar, but none of these really detract from the entertainment.

The biggest detriment to Demolition Racer’s replay value is that as the game progresses, tracks start getting more and more difficult to the point where luck (who smashes into other cars the most) rather than skill determines the winner of the race. You’ll have to drive a course 15 or 20 times to win, just because you were unlucky early on. The arena courses are particularly difficult in this regard – it’s just pure dumb luck as to whether you survive long enough to make it to the next track.

Delta Force: Black Hawk Down : PC

Novalogic’s Delta Force was originally one of the foremost tactical shooter series in computer gaming. However, if last year’s Task Force Dagger is any indication, the series is in decline. The newest game in the series, Delta Force: Black Hawk Down, focuses on the UN intervention in Somalia in the 1990s, as portrayed in the popular novel and motion picture Black Hawk Down. The new Delta Force game makes some improvements to the series, but it’s difficult to take seriously, especially considering some of the game’s action sequences, which resemble old arcade games more than they do actual military operations.

Black Hawk Down is loosely inspired by missions undertaken by elements of Delta Force, the US 75th Ranger Regiment, the 10th Mountain Division, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. The game is also filled with real-world vehicles and weapons, but don’t let that fool you. Black Hawk Down is mostly a straightforward, simplistic action game with some real-world trappings.

The game’s first single-player mission provides a good idea of what you can expect from Black Hawk Down. It lifts ideas from the movie and throws them together in an unrealistic and clumsy fashion. The mission itself resembles a rail shooter, an arcade-style shooting game in which you’re forced to move along a predetermined path while shooting any enemies in your way. For whatever reason, developers insisted on using this idea over and over. In the first mission, you take part in a rescue operation for a UN convoy that’s come under attack in the countryside. You operate a .50-caliber machine gun on one of a group of humvees that blithely drive right into hordes of enemy foot soldiers and vehicles approaching from all sides instead of slowing to properly engage the enemy, stopping, or taking an alternate route. You have no control over the foolish humvee drivers, but instead simply have to blast each new target that appears.

Area 51 is the only action-packed 1st Person Shooter set in the U.S. Governments most secret and secure military facility.

The U.S. Army has received a distress signal from Area 51 where a viral outbreak has just shut down the research facility and the automated quarantine procedures have locked all scientific and military personnel inside.

A small Special Forces unit led Specialist Ethan Cole of HAZMAT (hazardous materials) Division is sent to investigate.
